Fashion Designer General Idea share the inspiration for the Fall 2011 collection shown yesterday – mountains and military –
The letter “M” was the catalyst for General Idea’s Fall 2011 collection. From last season’s military look to the rugged aesthetic of the mountains, “M” inspired us.
General Idea has married those concepts of military and mountains through a collaboration with Italian Outerwear brand ‘NEPA’. Together, GI and NEPA have created a line of comfortable yet functional outerwear in rich hues of mustard, red, navy, and beige. Durable fabrications like cotton, wool, and polyester make them ideal for the outdoors.
General Idea has accessorized these pieces with utilitarian backpacks in a variety of colors and styles, cultivating looks that are both practical and on trend.
This is it” would be the conclusion I draw for the collection of General Idea Fall-Winter 2010/2011. Stunned as I was, every single outfit coming out on the runway still manage to carry my flustered little mind to another level of ecstasy! This is it! This collection says it all for the trend for the next winter. If I have the whole collection in my closet, I am all set.
I will say this is serious fashion, not in a sense that the collection is composed of some out-of-whack un-wearable design with which you can go no way but runway if you dare to wear them. But I mean, come on, chic we go after, of course, but we also need to consider pragmatism in the garment. General Idea not only surprisingly gives me the answer to the riddle that has been perplexing me for my entire life but offers me a better alternative…who says vogue and wearability cannot be a wonderful marriage!
The ten-minute show blossomed first with several models you might have as well seen on the runway in Milan and Paris which somewhat sugarcoats the idea even before you receive it, and then next thing you know is you are bombed unexpectedly by the ravishingly exquisite garments over and over. There are some staples in fabrics and style for winter you would not give a second thought on: turtle neck, hand warmer, wool knit duffle coat…but what you would not have foreseen is General Idea takes them to another level on which you are simply dazzled while you are still savoring it.
Layering in this collection is what I consider something hard to get rid of my mind. Just face it, leg warmer/leggings with shorts on the outer layer will dominate the next winter whether you are acceptant or not. Whether it’s the layering of patterns, colors, or fabrics, it shows how much of an adept you are in expressing yourself with your apprehension of the art of mix and matching. Fishnet Knit is subtly integrated into the look you will not stop noticing but makes all the sense; just like the pungent jalapeno in your pizza which stands out so much but also so indispensable to make a whole. Geometric print is something consistent in the spirit of General Idea these few seasons which I think is also genius and entertaining in voicing your personality. Two-toned leather jacket as seen in the show is gonna be a total rampage in the next winter. The highlight for me in the whole collection is the beige duffle coat with the color perfectly toned, with perfect length right above your hip, and the toggles so incredibly-shaped that says something just extraordinary.
General Idea literally gives you a general idea on how your closet should look like for the next fall and winter. Maybe it is a general idea but it definitely defines the tip top of fashion.
