Ring In Spring
Lanvin Metal et Pierre Ring
As someone who collects fashion like art, I am often asked about which items from my repertoire I cherish the most. While this is a near-impossible question to address, my gut instinct answer would have to be my jewelry (note: Chanel jackets are a close second)! Contemplating all of this season’s bling blingin’ offerings, I have my heart—and hands—set on the above Lanvin Metal et Pierre Ring. OOC!

Triple Moisture Hair Mask
I am obsessed with all of the bright looks shown on the spring runways and really want to try the trend myself. How does a woman in her 30s mix bold colors into her wardrobe while still looking classic? Thanks! – Nicole, via Submit A Question
I am obsessed with all of the bright looks shown on the spring runways and really want to try the trend myself. How does a woman in her 30s mix bold colors into her wardrobe while still looking classic? Thanks! – Nicole, submitted via Submit A Question
Thank you for the fabulous question! It is true that bright hues were all over the runways from Fendi and Burberry to Prada and Jil Sander. Rest-assured, there are plenty of age-appropriate means to interpret the look into your own closet. Take it from me!
For starters, as with any trend, it is always a good idea to test the waters with a bold accessory or two. Think: a shiny belt, multicolored necklace or vibrant pair of shoes. This approach will get you out of your comfort zone in such a way that is understated and chic. You can’t go wrong! Here are some of my current frill faves:
After you have come to terms with color, I recommend taking things up a notch via some striking apparel. A good rule of thumb is to rock one bright piece at a time while keeping the rest of your outfit neutral—a basic white tee always works! Agree? Try:
Finally, as a finishing touch to any beaming ensemble, paint your nails to per-fec-tion with an attention-grabbing polish. The brighter, the better! xoRZ
Fashion Week: Q&A with Derek Lam
As a frequently featured designer in The Zoe Report—and in my closet—Derek Lam was an obvious candidate for my Fashion Week Q&As! The San Francisco-born clothing creator is always one to watch, turning out crisp-clean collections season after season. In between prepping for his F/W 2011 show—which tore it up on the runways over the weekend!—and eBay Collection debut, he graciously extended a few moments to me to answer some questions for my readers, including what item in his closet he can’t live without and what every girl needs this spring. Ba-na-nas! Intrigued? Keep reading! xoRZ
RZ: First of all—let’s discuss your Spring ’11 collection, which is a stunning series of West Coast-minded looks…what is the influence behind it?
DL: Spring 2011 was a relaxed approach to rustic luxury. I was inspired by Peter Schjeldahl’s “Way Out West” piece from the January 25, 2010 issue of The New Yorker regarding California minimalism.
RZ: I die for your handbags—they are one thing I look forward to the most each season. What can we expect from you next on the accessories front?
DL: The collection will continue with the signature rams head hardware, a nod to my sign – Aries. For Spring 2011, I love exotics, bleached python and sea snake.
RZ: You obviously have a serious eye for womenswear, but speaking for the boys—what is one thing in your own closet you can’t life without?
DL: Tod’s loafers, you can wear them everywhere.
RZ: As a global fashion influence, what advice do you have for my Zoe Report readers who are planning for a career in the fashion industry?
DL: Internships are a good way to get a feel for the industry and gain experience. Hard work pays off, a great reference can be invaluable.
RZ: This spring, every girl needs an _________________.
DL: Ume bag!
Fashion Week: Q&A with Donna Karan
Today’s Fashion Week Q&A guest needs no intro, but just in case you are a newcomer on the scene, Donna Karan is a key player to know. The designer behind two acclaimed labels—Donna Karan and DKNY—she has produced back to back collections of gorgeous, wearable clothes for women for over 25 years. While gearing up for her F/W 2011 runway shows in New York—both were presented this past week—she made time to answer some insider’s questions exclusively for The Zoe Report. Pore over her answers below, then indulge yourself in her latest collections. xoRZ
RZ: As a pioneer for wearable women’s fashion, your designs are all made with the modern woman in mind—what is your idea of the perfect contemporary look, day vs. night?
DK: The perfect look goes day into evening with sophistication and ease. It works for you, your body, your style and your lifestyle. For most women, I love anything simple and black that sets a foundation, which you can add and subtract and change its attitude/function as the day goes on. A simple black jersey dress. A black bodysuit with pants or a skirt. You can layer on a cardigan, jacket or coat. You can opt for flats or heels. And you can use jewelry and scarves to personalize.
RZ: Your fashion empire includes not one, but two mah-jor lines, both the Donna Karan Collection and sister label, DKNY—what influences your design process for one as opposed to the other?
DK: Collection and DKNY are the two sides of woman and her city. So the approach is very different. Collection is a more personal vision. It’s about luxury, longevity and flexibility. I want each modern piece to become a part of you and your wardrobe, so a lot of effort goes into the fit, fabric and detail. DKNY is street fashion. It’s designed to be of the moment in terms of trends and attitude. Quality is paramount, but the look is edgier, younger and more casual. It also has a broader appeal, dressing multi-generations and lifestyles, so there is something for everyone.
RZ: I am so in awe of your S/S 2011 Collection—which is full of dreamy flowy neutrals…do you have one favorite look from the collection?
DK: I’d have to say it’s the slip dress worn with one of the body-conscious crushed jackets. I love its femininity and artistic spirit. I also love how relaxed it feels on the body. A longer length has a way of putting your whole body at ease.
RZ: How do you prepare for New York Fashion Week? What is your favorite part?
DK: It’s always stressful, even at this stage of my career. You want to put out the best collection you can, and yet are relying on so many sources from all over the world, so balance and timing is a real issue. I’m also very detail driven, so I’m always adding and subtracting until the absolute last minute. My favorite moment is when I come out at the end of the show and see my daughter’s face in the front row.
RZ: Tell me something that you are coveting for spring!
DK: Honestly? Time off. I love to travel, re-energize and seek new inspiration.
RZ: Many of my TZR readers are aspiring fashion designers, editors and buyers—as someone who has left such a substantial, ongoing impression on the tough industry, what piece of advice would you give them?
DK: Work in a store. Get to know your customer. See what works, what doesn’t and why. I tell that to every student I speak to. It’s truly the most valuable training you can have in fashion. Fashion is a creative art form, but it lives in the real world and retail is the best education imaginable.
Fashion Week: Q&A with Prabal Gurung
Only two years have passed since Prabal Gurung‘s inception on the scene, yet he is, if not already, on his way to becoming a household name. His divine dresses can be seen everywhere from the pages of Harper’s Bazaar to the red carpet—he is a go-to for my clients—and even on the First Lady herself. All things considered, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to include him in my Fashion Week Q&As for today. Obvi! Continue reading below for an up close and personal look into a world that is perfectly Prabal…xoRZ
RZ: In the short time that has passed since debuting your first collection, you have made a huge impact on the fashion sphere! Your F/W 11 show, which was presented this past week, is arguably your best collection yet. How would you describe it? And what was the inspiration?
PG: This season draws from the romantic styles seen throughout the Victorian era with a slightly disheveled, savage edge. The silhouettes and detailing create a juxtaposition between precious and casual couture, in a way reminiscent of Miss Havisham meets John Singer Sargent’s A Parisian Beggar Girl.
RZ: Your list of clientele includes the most prominent women imaginable, including Michelle Obama, Demi Moore and Zoe Saldana—who in your words is the Prabal Gurung woman?
PG: The Prabal Gurung woman is one who is confident, celebrates her femininity, intelligent and chooses to wear pieces that make her feel her best. I have always said that I design for the thinking man—trades sex symbol and I truly continue to do just that.
RZ: Talking the current season—your S/S 11 collection is an a-mah-zing merger of color-blocking, innovative fabrics and expert tailoring…what was your motivation behind it?
PG: For the S/S 11 collection, I really wanted to include bright, unexpected color combinations. The bold hues and the simplicity of the silhouettes made the collection quite versatile and it seems that it was quite well-received by my audience.
RZ: What goes on behind-the-scenes in preparing for New York Fashion Week? What is your favorite part?
PG: There are so many components that go into show prep season after season. Everything from the lighting and runway to the collection itself needs to come together and compliment each other. It’s one thing to have a vision but another to bring it to life. It is a challenge but worth every moment that leads up to the lights going down.
RZ: One thing my Zoe Report readers are all dying to know—can we anticipate a line of Prabal Gurung handbags and accessories in the future?
PG: I don’t know how far into the future but you can expect handbags as well as many other product categories. Every day I work toward creating a lifestyle brand and I am so excited by the endless possibilities that hopefully will bring!
Availability: Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2011 Collection will be available at Fred Segal Couture this month (310.458.8100). For additional retailer information, visit Prabalgurung.com.
Fashion Week: Q&A with Marc Jacobs
Moving right along to the second installment of my Fashion Week Q&As, I have an extra special interview to share with you today: Marc Jacobs! For realz! Despite his insane schedule leading up to his runway shows—both of his eponymous lines, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, will be presented in New York next week—he did me a favor as my cherished friend and took time to answer a few questions exclusively for The Zoe Report. Keep reading for an insider’s view into the brain of one of fashion’s most influential players…and don’t forget to check Style.com next week for a full look at his Fall/Winter 2011 collections! xoRZ
RZ: With three prominent fashion labels on your repertoire—Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton—you are an untouchable force in the fashion industry…how do you balance it all?
MJ: Do I balance it? News to me…
RZ: How does your design process differ from one of your lines vs. the others? Do you have a different woman in mind for each label?
MJ: I’m schizophrenic—no problem switching gears.
RZ: I am completely mesmerized by your spring collection for your main line, Marc Jacobs—’70s glam perfection—what was your inspiration behind the collection?
MJ: The hedonistic disco days that I loved so much!
RZ: You obviously have an amazing fashion sense, which is reflected both in your own wardrobe and multiple labels—what advice would you give to my readers of The Zoe Report for finding their own personal style?
MJ: If it feels good—do it!
RZ: This spring, every girl needs a _________________.
MJ: Lot more!
RZ: The Marc Jacobs empire is ever-expanding. What can we expect next?
MJ: Who knows…THOUGHTS? HA HA HA.
P.S. There’s still time to find the perfect gift this Valentine’s Day. Shop Cartier’s LOVE Collection now for iconic pieces that will be treasured for a lifetime. Every love story should be told with Cartier.
When suffering from a serious case of closet boredom—the worst—I find the most effective antidote almost always comes in the form of an accessory…i.e. a killer pair of shoes, statement jewelry or groovy clutch. Whatever it takes to turn a snoozy outfit upside-down—right? One dope way to adorn yourself this spring is via a bold and unexpected turban as demonstrated on the runways at Jason Wu and Giorgio Armani, and by hair accessory extraordinaire, Jennifer Behr, with her latest work, today’s Gold Turban Wrap!
A longtime admirer of Jennifer Behr‘s diverse and divine headpieces, I am dying to add this new golden topper to my collection. Hand sewn out of vintage 1960′s lustrous fabric with tie closure at the back, it is an exquisite piece that channels timeless glamour. OOC. Keep in mind that when wearing a turban you can get away with keeping the rest of your look slightly understated, so your options are endless. My outfit instinct? Complement Jennifer Behr’s metallic wrap with a floral print maxi, metallic platforms and bold eyeshadow for a golden goddess getup! xoRZ
